Under the World Conservation Union (IUCN) ‘red list’ the nile-soft shelled turtles are considered critically endangered.



ENDANGERED (EN) - A taxon is Endangered when it is not Critically Endangered but is facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future.

Threats

Threats to nile-soft shelled turtles vary from one region to another but include:


   
Loss of habitat due to coastal development, including tourism and in dustrialisation
 
Accidental capture by fishing activities (e.g. trawling)
Pollution due to industrial waste, marine debris, tar etc.
Collision with motorboats
Animal predation
